The partnership between the NDSHRM State Council and the Department of Commerce was established in 2012 when it was identified both entities were working toward identifying strategies to overcome the impending statewide workforce shortage in the state. This partnership allowed both organizations to rally resources to solve the workforce challenges by providing an educational setting where HR professionals and business leaders could come together. This effort benefited both organizations by renewing focus on workforce development strategies; increased leadership on workforce initiatives; and provided networking and resources to human resource and business leaders.

Over the last year, the state workforce team has been working on the identification and validation of workforce related challenges. This data has been provided in a Workforce Development Council Report for executive, agencies, and legislative consideration. Based on the areas in which the state has the more pervasive workforce issues, additional focus must be given. This will require trade-offs in priorities predicated on today’s environment.

One such trade-off is the dissolution of the partnership formed by NDSHRM State Council and the Department of Commerce. Although it was a successful partnership, the Department of Commerce has recommended a “divide and conquer” approach to the conference strategy based upon the resources restraints. This approach will allow the ND Workforce team to focus on the strategies outlined by the Governor’s office and the Workforce Development Council. Meanwhile, NDSHRM State Council will continue to support human resource and workforce development leaders across North Dakota by providing leadership, connections, development opportunities and resources.

Therefore, the 2019 Workforce and HR Conference will be transitioned to and hosted solely by the NDSHRM State Council. The Department of Commerce will support the conference through sponsorship and transitional support.
